About the artist

Kando grew up in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo. He currently lives and works in Montreal. He completed his training at the Kinshasa Academy of Fine Arts (2009) and more recently graduated from the Bachelor of Design program at UQAM (2016). In 2020, he received the Best of the Art Fair Toronto Outdoor Award, donated by the Rudolph P. Bratty Family Foundation. He has participated in exhibitions in Canada, the United States, Africa and Europe.

The artist's work explores Afro-descendant experiences in a globalized society. The artist's personal experience, marked by uprooting from his country of origin, has played a decisive role in his reflection on society. Her encounters, exchanges and confrontations have nourished her artistic approach.

Physically, his work is a blend of painting, sculpture and collage, giving rise to a metaphorical result that evokes suffering as much as transcendence, construction as much as deconstruction. Her work lies at the intersection of figuration and abstraction. Inspired by and interpreting artistic movements such as action painting, expressionism and impressionism, the artist focuses on the emotions of the subjects depicted, thus confronting the calm and chaos surrounding the subject and its environment. This is his way of paying tribute to the human capacity for resilience in the face of contemporary economic, socio-political and environmental problems.
